Weekend Crisis Advocate Job Description 

Estes Valley Crisis Advocates is a non-profit agency committed to providing advocacy services to victims of  crime and crisis including safe housing for domestic violence survivors, counseling, support groups, referrals,  and community education. 

Title: Weekend Crisis Advocate  Pay: $19-20.50 per hour depending on experience

Need: Advocate will perform emotional first aid to mitigate traumatic effects of crime and crisis as  well as connect crime victims with information, resources, referrals, and ensure that immediate  safety needs are met.  

Deliverables: The Weekend Crisis Advocate is on call to provide crisis intervention for victims  of crime and crisis from 5:30pm Friday through 8:00am the following Monday. Advocates operate in close cooperation with Estes Park Police Department and Larimer County Sheriff’s Department to provide emergent advocacy on the scene of a crime or crisis.  

Outcome: Victims of crimes and their families will feel that they have some control over their situation  following a victimization. Crime victims will be provided with information about the rights of  crime victims in Colorado and be provided an explanation of how to exercise those rights. Crime  and crisis victims will have emotional needs addressed, know community resources available to  them, as well as have a strong support network from the moment the on-call Crisis Advocate is paged to the scene.  

Key Responsibilities:  

Weekend Advocates will be available to respond to a page from law enforcement from 8:00am Saturday through 8:00am the following Monday. During the time that they are on call, they are  required to stay in the Estes Valley area to ensure a 15 minutes’ response time in the case they  are paged to a scene by EPPD or LCSO. They are also required to refrain from the use of any alcohol, marijuana, or other intoxicating substances at all times while on call. The Crisis  Advocate will be required to use their personal vehicle to get to crime/crisis scenes where they have been paged. Upon being paged to and arriving at a  scene, the Crisis Advocate will check in with the officer present in order to be directed to the  primary victim requiring advocacy. The Crisis Advocate will then assess the victim’s needs and  work to meet them or provide referrals to entities that may help to meet long-term needs. All EVCA staff and volunteers are required to maintain client confidentiality practices during their  involvement with the agency and after involvement ceases. 

Qualifications: Crisis Advocates must be compassionate, empathic, personable, and able to work with  individuals from all ethnic, religious, or social backgrounds and of any gender or sexual  orientation. Advocates who have a history of victimization must be at a healthy place in their healing journey, so that exposure to potential triggers will not negatively affect the services  being provided to clients. Advocates must have a current driver’s license, insurance, and be  able to clear a standard background check. Advocates must complete a minimum of 15 hours of online Victim Assistance Training prior to beginning work and prior to beginning on scene training. Experience in human services, related fields or a degree in an area of human services is preferred. Bilingual Spanish/English is a plus.

Hours:  14-18 hours per week. 14 hours from the 5:30 p.m. Friday to 8:00 a.m. Monday and Monday evening on call shifts. Then up to 4 hours per week in the office where the advocate could run a support group, work with clients in the safehouse, or complete other programming and office tasks as needed. Holiday on-call shifts are rotated between staff and volunteers.
